Could purging in eating disorders raise cancer risk? new study investigates
NCT ID NCT06532734
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study aims to see how common Barrett's esophagus is in people with eating disorders who have been purging (vomiting or ruminating) for at least 5 years. Researchers will use a simple, non-endoscopic device called EsoGuard to collect cell samples from the esophagus. The study will enroll 25 adults admitted to a specialized eating disorder center. Results could help decide if current screening guidelines should be expanded for this group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If this study finds a link, it could lead to better screening guidelines for Barrett's esophagus in people with eating disorders who purge.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small pilot study (25 people) and only looks at one group. It may not apply to everyone with eating disorders, and it won't test any treatment.
