Mammograms may soon double as heart disease screenings

NCT ID NCT07156006

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether calcium deposits in breast arteries, seen on mammograms, are linked to heart disease risk factors. Researchers also tested an AI program to automatically detect these calcifications. The goal is to see if routine mammograms could provide extra information about a woman's heart health without additional tests.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple, non-invasive way to screen for heart disease risk during routine mammograms.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study that was terminated early, so results may be limited. The link between breast artery calcifications and heart risk is still not fully proven.
