Eye-Opening study: pupil test may gauge pain in confused ICU patients

NCT ID NCT05811208

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a device that measures pupil changes (automated pupillometry) can help assess pain in intensive care patients who are confused or delirious after surgery. Pain is hard to evaluate in these patients because they cannot communicate clearly. The study enrolled 49 adults and compared pupil measurements with standard pain scales to see if they matched. Results may improve pain management for vulnerable ICU patients.
