Could your own probiotics ease bowel troubles after rectal cancer surgery?
NCT ID NCT07366047
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether taking your own gut bacteria (autologous probiotics) can reduce bowel problems after ileostomy closure in rectal cancer patients. Forty adults who had rectal cancer surgery with a temporary ileostomy will receive capsules containing their own lactobacillus and bifidobacterium for 100 days. The main goal is to see if this lowers the rate of major bowel dysfunction (LARS) after 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
autologous probiotics (lactobacillus and bifidobacterium)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a way to improve bowel function and quality of life for rectal cancer patients after ileostomy reversal.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment may not improve symptoms significantly.
