Your genes might predict a hidden heart risk

NCT ID NCT07641582

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a person's genetic makeup can help spot undiagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF), an irregular heartbeat that raises stroke risk. About 800 adults with symptoms or risk factors will wear a heart monitor for 7 days and use a handheld ECG device at home for a year. Researchers will combine genetic data with medical history to build a prediction model.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple genetic test that helps doctors identify people at high risk for atrial fibrillation before it causes a stroke.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage observational study, not a treatment trial. The genetic risk score may not improve detection enough to change current practice, and results may not apply to all populations.
