Could a simple injection tame stubborn achilles pain?
NCT ID NCT07650396
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial investigates whether adding up to three corticosteroid injections to standard exercise therapy improves pain and function in adults with chronic midportion Achilles tendinopathy. Participants receive either the steroid injection or a placebo (lidocaine only), alongside education and a structured calf-strengthening program. The study tracks symptom changes and any tendon ruptures over one year to weigh benefits against risks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Methylprednisolone acetate (corticosteroid) plus lidocaine
What this could lead to
If successful, adding a few corticosteroid injections to exercise therapy could provide lasting pain relief and better function for people with stubborn Achilles tendon pain.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 3 trial, but corticosteroid injections carry a risk of tendon rupture. The study directly measures this risk, and results may not apply to all types of Achilles problems.
