New hope for lung cancer patients with scarred lungs: precision radiation trial underway

NCT ID NCT03485378

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase II trial tests a precise type of radiation called SABR in 39 people with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer who also have interstitial lung disease (lung scarring). The goal is to see if this treatment can control the cancer while keeping side effects manageable. Participants are divided into groups based on the severity of their lung disease, and the study tracks survival, tumor control, and cough severity.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that precise radiation is a safe and effective option for lung cancer patients who also have interstitial lung disease, offering a treatment path where surgery is not possible.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 39 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Radiation can cause lung inflammation or scarring, especially in patients with existing lung disease.
