New depression drug shows promise in early trial
NCT ID NCT06400121
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests a single injection of apimostinel, a fast-acting antidepressant, in 150 adults with major depression. Half also receive digital cognitive training sessions to see if it extends the drug's effects. The trial is placebo-controlled and double-blind, meaning neither participants nor researchers know who gets the real drug. The goal is to quickly ease depression symptoms with minimal side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
apimostinel
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new, fast-acting antidepressant option with fewer side effects, and show that digital cognitive training can make the benefits last longer.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 150 people. The drug may not work better than placebo, and the cognitive training may not extend effects. Side effects are reported as minimal, but long-term safety is unknown.
