Summary

This study tested whether the antiviral drug valganciclovir can improve depression symptoms and reduce brain inflammation in people with major depressive disorder who also have a common virus called CMV. Twenty participants took either the drug or a placebo for 8 weeks, and researchers measured changes in brain scans, blood inflammation, and mood. The trial is small and early-stage, so results are preliminary.
