NCT ID NCT04724447
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether the antiviral drug valganciclovir can improve depression symptoms and reduce brain inflammation in people with major depressive disorder who also have a common virus called CMV. Twenty participants took either the drug or a placebo for 8 weeks, and researchers measured changes in brain scans, blood inflammation, and mood. The trial is small and early-stage, so results are preliminary.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Valganciclovir (antiviral drug)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment for depression in people with chronic CMV infection.
