Pilot study tests safer blood thinner options for pregnant women with mechanical heart valves
NCT ID NCT07658989
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study looks at pregnant women with mechanical heart valves to see if using low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) plus low dose aspirin works as well as the standard blood thinner warfarin to prevent dangerous clots around the valve. The study will check if it is possible to maintain the right blood levels of these medications during pregnancy. If successful, the data will help design a larger trial comparing survival, clot risk, and safety of these two approaches.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and low dose aspirin (LDA)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could show that LMWH plus aspirin is a safe and effective alternative to warfarin for pregnant women with mechanical heart valves, potentially reducing clotting risks and improving outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study, so results may not be definitive. Maintaining proper blood levels of these medications during pregnancy can be challenging, and there are inherent risks of bleeding or clotting.
