Can blood thinners be safer for stroke patients with hidden brain bleeds?
NCT ID NCT05032053
First seen Jul 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 31, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study follows 3,000 ischemic stroke patients who also have cerebral microbleeds — tiny spots of old blood in the brain. Researchers are tracking how different antithrombotic drugs (blood thinners) affect the number of microbleeds and the risk of future strokes or brain bleeds over one year. The goal is to find which medications are safest and to identify blood markers that could predict outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- antithrombotic drugs (blood thinners)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help doctors choose safer blood-thinning medications for stroke patients who have tiny brain bleeds, reducing the risk of future strokes or bleeding.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a controlled experiment, so it cannot prove cause and effect. Results may not apply to all patients, and individual risks vary.
