New study questions rush to antibiotics for ventilator lung infections
NCT ID NCT06743529
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two approaches for treating suspected ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in ICU patients who are not severely ill. One group gets antibiotics immediately, while the other waits for lab confirmation. The goal is to see if waiting reduces unnecessary antibiotic use without increasing deaths or time on a ventilator. About 686 adults on ventilators for more than 48 hours will take part.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- antibiotics
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could show that waiting for lab confirmation before starting antibiotics is safe for non-severe VAP, reducing unnecessary antibiotic use and fighting resistance.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage trial with 686 participants. The conservative strategy might delay treatment for some infected patients, potentially worsening outcomes. Results may not apply to severe cases.
