Could a special suture cut infection risk after joint replacement?
NCT ID NCT07322289
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether antibiotic-coated braided sutures work as well as standard monofilament sutures in patients with infected hip or knee replacements. Surgeons currently use weaker monofilament sutures in infected cases to reduce bacterial growth. If the coated braided sutures prove safe, surgeons could use stronger sutures without increasing infection risk. The trial will enroll 142 adults and track treatment failure at 90 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
triclosan-coated braided suture
What this could lead to
If it works, surgeons could use stronger, easier-to-handle sutures without raising infection risk in joint infection surgeries.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (142 patients) comparing two suture types, not a new drug or cure. Results may not apply to all patients or infections.
