Could a simple anal pressure test end chronic constipation in kids?
NCT ID NCT07291661
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will test whether a procedure called high-resolution anorectal manometry can help doctors figure out why some children have severe constipation that doesn't get better with standard treatments. The researchers will measure muscle and nerve function in the rectum and anus of 54 children aged 4 to 18. The goal is to use these measurements to choose more targeted treatments, such as biofeedback or botox injections.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- High-resolution anorectal manometry (a diagnostic device)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help doctors better understand the cause of a child's constipation and choose the right treatment, like biofeedback or botox injections.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 54 children, and it is not yet recruiting. The test is diagnostic, not a treatment, so it may not directly improve symptoms.
