Anesthesia choice may influence lung cancer return, major trial investigates
NCT ID NCT06330038
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This large clinical trial is testing whether the type of anesthesia used during lung cancer surgery affects the chances of the cancer coming back. Over 5,000 people having surgery for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer will be randomly assigned to receive either intravenous propofol or inhaled gas anesthesia. The study will track cancer recurrence and survival for years after surgery to see if one method is better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Propofol and inhaled anesthetics (sevoflurane, desflurane, isoflurane)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that choosing a specific anesthesia type during lung cancer surgery helps reduce the chance of cancer coming back.
What could go wrong
This is a large, late-stage trial, but it's testing a subtle effect—anesthesia type may not significantly impact cancer recurrence. Results may not change standard practice.
