New chemo regimen aims to boost survival in kids with down syndrome and leukemia
NCT ID NCT07232134
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a specific set of four chemotherapy blocks in children (0-18 years) who have both acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and Down syndrome. The goal is to see if this tailored treatment can improve long-term survival and reduce harsh side effects compared to past approaches. The trial is enrolling 100 participants across multiple centers in Russia.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
chemotherapy (cytarabine, idarubicin, etoposide, daunorubicin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could establish a safer, more effective chemotherapy regimen for children with both AML and Down syndrome, improving survival rates and reducing toxic side effects.
What could go wrong
This is a non-randomized trial with no control group, so results may be less definitive. Chemotherapy carries significant risks like infection and organ damage, and the reduced doses might not control the leukemia as well as standard treatment.
