Heart surgery patients may get a patch to stop dangerous rhythm problems
NCT ID NCT06722196
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether placing a biodegradable patch soaked with the drug amiodarone on the heart during surgery can prevent atrial fibrillation (a common irregular heartbeat) afterward. About 500 adults having elective heart surgery will be randomly assigned to get either the amiodarone patch or a plain saline patch. The goal is to see if the drug patch reduces the number of patients who develop atrial fibrillation while in the hospital.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- amiodarone
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a simple, targeted way to prevent dangerous heart rhythm problems after cardiac surgery, reducing complications and hospital stays.
- What could go wrong
- This is still an early-phase trial with 500 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The patch could cause side effects like inflammation or bleeding, and it may not reduce AF as hoped.
