AI could help doctors diagnose lung cancer faster during a bronchoscopy

NCT ID NCT07662967

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests an artificial intelligence (AI) prototype designed to quickly evaluate tissue samples taken during a bronchoscopy, a procedure used to diagnose lung cancer. The AI analyzes microscope images of the samples to determine if they are adequate for diagnosis and whether they appear benign or malignant. The study involves 65 adults undergoing bronchoscopy, and the AI's results are compared to the final lab diagnosis. This is a pilot study to see if the AI works well enough to be tested in larger trials.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Artificial intelligence prototype for digital rapid on-site evaluation

What this could lead to

If successful, this AI could help doctors quickly determine if a tissue sample is adequate for diagnosis, potentially reducing the need for repeat procedures and speeding up lung cancer detection.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early pilot study with 65 participants. The AI is not yet approved for medical use and is only being tested for research. It may not perform as well in real-world settings.
