AI creates 3D gum disease maps to guide dental surgery
NCT ID NCT07505251
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests an artificial intelligence system called PerioAI V2.0 that creates a detailed 3D map of gum disease from dental scans. Researchers will enroll 80 adults with moderate-to-severe periodontitis who need gum surgery. The AI's map will be compared to what surgeons see during the actual surgery to see if it accurately identifies bone defects and helps plan treatment. If it works, this tool could make gum surgery more precise and less reliant on a dentist's experience alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- PerioAI V2.0 software (artificial intelligence diagnostic tool)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this AI tool could help dentists see gum disease in 3D before surgery, leading to more accurate treatment plans and better outcomes.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The AI's accuracy depends on scan quality and may not outperform standard exams.
