AI eye doctor: new study aims to spot Blindness-Causing diseases
NCT ID NCT07497815
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will develop and test an artificial intelligence system to detect common eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy using 15,000 existing eye images from Costa Rican patients. The goal is to create a tool that works accurately for local populations, since AI systems trained on other ethnic groups may not perform as well. No new treatments or patient contact are involved—it's purely a diagnostic technology validation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a reliable AI tool for diagnosing eye diseases in Latin American populations, improving early detection and reducing blindness.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational study using existing images, not a clinical treatment trial. The AI may not perform as well in real-world settings or on different populations.
