AI trained to spot hidden tooth infections on routine x-rays
NCT ID NCT05888935
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether an artificial intelligence program can detect periapical lesions (infections at the tip of a tooth root) on common panoramic dental X-rays. The AI is trained using 3D cone-beam CT scans as the gold standard. Researchers will enroll 2000 patients who have had both types of imaging within three months. If the AI works well, it could help dentists catch these infections earlier without needing more advanced scans.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Artificial intelligence algorithm
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this AI could help dentists find hidden tooth infections earlier using a common, low-radiation X-ray, potentially reducing the need for more advanced scans.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage algorithm test, not a treatment. The AI may not be accurate enough in real-world use, and the study only includes patients who already had both types of scans.
