Can an AI app nudge Food-Insecure young adults toward Heart-Healthy eating?
NCT ID NCT07108452
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a smartphone app that uses artificial intelligence to send gentle reminders can help young adults (ages 18–24) who struggle with food insecurity make better food choices. About 114 UC Davis students will use either a basic app that tracks what they eat or a gamified version that also gives encouraging nudges. Researchers will measure how often people use the app, whether they like it, and if their diet quality improves over six weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AI-powered mobile app with behavioral nudges
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a smartphone app can help young adults with limited food access make healthier dietary choices, potentially reducing future heart disease risk.
What could go wrong
This is a small feasibility study (114 participants) with no disease outcome—only diet quality and app usage. Results may not apply to other groups or translate to long-term health improvements.
