Magnetic pulses to the brain may lift depression after concussion
NCT ID NCT05426967
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a non-invasive procedure called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can safely reduce depressive symptoms in U.S. military service members and veterans who have had a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. About 198 participants will receive either active rTMS or a sham (fake) treatment to compare effects. The goal is to find a better way to treat depression in this group without medication.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a non-drug treatment option for depression after concussion, potentially improving quality of life for military members and veterans.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early adaptive trial with no phase designation, so results are uncertain. The sham group may also show improvement, and long-term benefits are not yet known.
