New study aims to spot which kids with rare brain inflammation will recover fully

NCT ID NCT07188194

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study will follow 32 children diagnosed with their first episode of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), a rare brain inflammation that usually follows an infection. Researchers will check if early MRI scans, spinal fluid tests, and symptoms can predict which children will recover fully and which might develop lasting problems or other conditions like multiple sclerosis. The goal is to better understand the disease and improve care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors identify which children with ADEM need more aggressive treatment early on, potentially improving recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early observational study (32 participants) that only looks for patterns—it does not test any treatment. Results may not apply to all children with ADEM.
