New therapy for insomnia: stop fighting sleep and start living
NCT ID NCT06336551
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a type of talk therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can improve sleep in adults with insomnia. 93 participants were randomly assigned to either receive ACT for 7 weeks or join a waitlist. The therapy encourages people to stop struggling with sleep and instead focus on meaningful daytime activities. Researchers measured sleep severity, mood, and quality of life to see if ACT works on its own.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for insomnia (ACT-I)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, drug-free way to manage insomnia by focusing on daytime activities rather than controlling sleep.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 93 participants, and the waitlist design may overestimate benefits. Results may not apply to everyone with insomnia.
