Knee surgery showdown: which graft gets athletes back in the game faster?
NCT ID NCT07573293
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at 65 professional athletes who had ACL reconstruction surgery using either a bone-patellar tendon-bone graft or a hamstring tendon graft. Researchers measured muscle strength, knee function, and how quickly athletes returned to their sport, following them for up to five years. The goal was to see which graft type leads to better recovery and fewer complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
surgical procedure using either bone-patellar tendon-bone or hamstring tendon autograft
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help surgeons choose the best graft for professional athletes to improve recovery and return to sport.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 65 participants, so results may not apply to all athletes. Both graft types have known risks like pain or re-injury.
