Could an extra stitch save Kids' ACL repairs? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT04825587
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether repairing an additional knee ligament (the ALL) at the same time as standard ACL surgery can lower the chance of the ACL graft failing in children. About 240 kids aged 18 and under who need ACL surgery will be randomly assigned to get either the standard surgery alone or the standard surgery plus the extra ligament repair. The goal is to see if the combined approach leads to fewer re-tears and better long-term knee function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- surgical procedure (concomitant ACL and ALL reconstruction)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a standard surgical approach that lowers the risk of ACL graft failure in children, improving long-term knee stability.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively early-stage trial with 240 participants, so results may not apply to all children. Adding ALL reconstruction could increase surgical complications without clear benefit.
