New Alzheimer's vaccine shows promise in early trial
NCT ID NCT03461276
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 2 study tested ABvac40, a vaccine designed to help the immune system target and clear a protein called amyloid-beta 40, which builds up in the brains of people with Alzheimer's. The trial included 134 adults aged 55-80 with mild cognitive impairment or very mild Alzheimer's. Participants received multiple shots of the vaccine or a placebo over 24 months to check safety, immune response, and effects on disease markers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ABvac40 (a vaccine targeting the amyloid-beta 40 protein)
What this could lead to
If successful, this vaccine could slow or prevent progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's dementia by training the immune system to clear harmful amyloid proteins.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 2 trial with only 134 participants, so results are preliminary. The vaccine may not produce a strong enough immune response or could cause side effects like brain swelling, as seen with similar Alzheimer's vaccines.
