Does tummy tuck surgery affect breathing and reflux in older women?
NCT ID NCT07868562
First seen Oct 09, 2026 · Last updated Oct 16, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers compare diaphragm mechanics, breathing muscle strength, and chest-abdomen movement in three groups of women aged 60 and older with obesity: those with GERD and a past abdominoplasty, those with abdominoplasty alone, and those with GERD alone. Participants undergo ultrasound, breathing tests, and questionnaires. The study asks whether having both GERD and abdominoplasty is linked to worse breathing function and more reflux symptoms.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the study finds a link, it could help doctors monitor breathing and reflux more closely in women who have had abdominoplasty. It could also shape advice on exercise and rehabilitation for this group.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small observational study of 30 women, so it can show associations but not prove cause and effect. Results may not apply to men, younger people, or those with different body types or surgical histories.

Who is studied
The study population will consist of adult women, with and without a diagnosis of GERD and with and without a history of abdominoplasty. After confirmation of eligibility criteria, participants will be assigned to three study groups based on their clinical and surgical characteristics: GERD + abdominoplasty group (GERD+AP), GERD group (GERD), and abdominoplasty group (AP).
