New PET scan could revolutionize staging of deadly cancers
NCT ID NCT07478523
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a new type of PET scan using a tracer called 68Ga-FAPI-46 can more accurately detect the spread of pancreatic and bile duct cancers compared to standard CT and MRI scans. The goal is to see if this scan changes how doctors classify the cancer stage and plan treatment. The trial will enroll 120 people with newly diagnosed, potentially curable cancers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
68Ga-FAPI-46 (a radioactive tracer for PET scans)
What this could lead to
If successful, this scan could become a new standard for staging these cancers, helping doctors choose the right treatment earlier and avoid unnecessary surgeries.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 2 study with 120 participants, so results are still preliminary. The new scan may not prove more accurate than current methods, and it involves radiation exposure.
