New MRI scan could replace endoscopy for liver patients
NCT ID NCT04867954
First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study is testing a new type of MRI (called 4D flow MRI) to see if it can find dangerous veins in the stomach and throat of people with liver cirrhosis. These veins can burst and cause deadly bleeding. Currently, doctors use a camera down the throat (endoscopy) to check, but that is uncomfortable and often not needed. The goal is to replace endoscopy with a simple, non-invasive MRI scan. About 146 adults with cirrhosis, plus healthy and obese volunteers, will take part.
