New MRI scan could predict fatal bleeding without a scope
NCT ID NCT04867954
First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated Jun 10, 2026 · Updated 34 times
Summary
This study is testing a new, non-invasive MRI technique (4D flow MRI) to detect dangerous varices in the esophagus and stomach of people with cirrhosis. Currently, patients need an endoscopy—a tube down the throat—to check for these varices, which can burst and cause fatal bleeding. If successful, this MRI could replace the need for many endoscopies, making screening safer and easier for patients.
