Virtual worlds, real comfort: could VR lift spirits in care homes?
NCT ID NCT07742137
First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study explores whether immersive virtual reality (VR) can safely and comfortably improve psychological well-being in older adults living in long-term care. Participants aged 65 and older will take part in eight guided VR sessions over four weeks, with some receiving structured activities and others passive exposure. The study will measure how well the program is tolerated, its acceptability, and any early signs of benefit to emotional well-being.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Immersive virtual reality sessions
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could point toward a non-drug, engaging way to improve emotional well-being and quality of life for older adults in care facilities.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with only 18 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Some people might feel discomfort or cybersickness during VR sessions.
