Mailed nicotine patches and pills: a new way to kick the habit?

NCT ID NCT04525755

First seen Feb 19, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study tested whether mailing free samples of varenicline (Chantix) or nicotine patches and lozenges helps smokers quit. Over 650 daily smokers were randomly assigned to receive a free sample of varenicline, nicotine replacement products, or no medication. Participants completed surveys over six months and daily diaries for the first month. The goal was to see if simply offering free medication by mail increases quit rates.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

varenicline (Chantix) and nicotine replacement therapy (patches and lozenges)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could make it easier for smokers to try quitting by getting free medication samples by mail, without needing a doctor visit.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase study, so results may not be conclusive. The sample is small and self-reported, so actual quit rates could be lower.
