New pain block may cut opioid use after kidney surgery

NCT ID NCT07560267

First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether an ultrasound-guided nerve block (erector spinae plane block) can better manage pain after kidney removal surgery compared to standard opioid-based methods. About 66 adults having open nephrectomy will be randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block plus anesthesia or standard pain relief alone. The goal is to see if the block lowers pain scores and reduces the need for opioids in the first 24 hours after surgery.
