New nerve block may cut opioid use after kidney surgery

NCT ID NCT07560267

First seen May 03, 2026 · Last updated May 03, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether an ultrasound-guided nerve block (erector spinae plane block) can better control pain after kidney removal surgery compared to standard opioid-based pain relief. About 66 adults having open nephrectomy will be randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block plus general anesthesia or standard pain management. The goal is to see if the nerve block reduces pain scores and the amount of opioids needed in the first 24 hours after surgery.
