Can amino acid supplements help reverse muscle wasting in liver disease patients?
NCT ID NCT07281846
First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 25 times
Summary
This study looks at whether adding branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements to a standard liver procedure (TIPS) can help reverse muscle loss (sarcopenia) in people with cirrhosis and high blood pressure in the liver. About 164 patients will be randomly assigned to receive either BCAA supplements or a placebo for 3 months after TIPS. Researchers will measure changes in muscle mass and physical function over 6 months to see if the supplements make a difference.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that adding BCAA supplements to TIPS helps reverse muscle loss and improve physical function in cirrhosis patients.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (164 participants) and results may not apply to all patients. BCAA supplements may not significantly improve outcomes or could cause side effects.
