First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This completed study tested two types of telehealth cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in 48 veterans with chronic pain who also felt lonely. One therapy focused on loneliness, the other on coping with pain. Researchers measured changes in loneliness, social interactions, and pain interference. The goal was to see if a loneliness-focused approach could improve well-being beyond standard pain management.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a practical, home-based therapy to help veterans with chronic pain feel less lonely and better manage daily life.

What could go wrong

This was a very small, early-stage trial with only 48 participants, so results may not apply to all veterans. The therapy requires active participation and may not work for everyone.
