Statins show promise for slowing macular degeneration in early trial

NCT ID NCT04735263

First seen Jan 29, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study tests whether high-dose atorvastatin (a cholesterol-lowering drug) can improve night vision in people with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). About 21 participants will take the drug and have their dark adaptation (how well eyes adjust to dim light) measured alongside eye scans. The goal is to see if faster dark adaptation signals a positive response to treatment, potentially offering a new way to manage AMD.
