New ER tool slashes unnecessary lung scans for blood clots

NCT ID NCT06015529

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study tested a new scoring system called 4PEPS to help emergency doctors decide if a patient with suspected pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung) really needs a CT scan or other imaging. Over 3,000 patients across 20 hospitals took part. The goal was to see if using the score could safely reduce the number of imaging tests compared to usual care. Researchers tracked serious complications for 90 days to ensure the approach was safe.
