Can a simple online questionnaire help rural smokers kick the habit?
NCT ID NCT06236347
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether an electronic visit (e-visit) can help adults aged 40+ in rural areas quit smoking and get screened for COPD. Participants are randomly assigned to receive the e-visit or standard care. The e-visit is like an online questionnaire about smoking history and symptoms, and may lead to a prescription for quit-smoking medication. The study lasts 24 weeks and involves surveys and breath tests.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Smoking cessation e-visit (online questionnaire and prescription option)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a scalable, low-cost way to help rural smokers quit and detect COPD early.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study (144 participants) testing a behavioral intervention, not a drug. Results may not apply broadly, and quitting smoking is difficult even with support.
