Mapping the immune chaos of sepsis to find who needs a boost
NCT ID NCT07698093
First seen Jul 13, 2026 · Last updated Jul 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study follows 300 adults in intensive care with septic shock to track how their immune systems change over time. Researchers will analyze blood samples taken alongside routine care to measure different types of immune cells. The goal is to understand why some patients develop long-lasting immune suppression, which can lead to secondary infections and worse outcomes. This knowledge could help identify patients who might benefit from future immune-stimulating treatments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could point toward new ways to identify which septic shock patients might benefit from immune-boosting therapies.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may reveal patterns but cannot prove that any intervention improves outcomes.

Inclusion Criteria: * Men or women aged 18 years or over * Hospitalised patients with septic shock that began less than 48 hours prior to screening, defined by: * the presence of a diagnosed or suspected site of infection requiring microbiological sampling * the need for vasopressor therapy to maintain a mean arterial pressure ≥ 65 mm Hg * hyperlactataemia \> 2 mmol/L (18 mg/dL) within 24 hours of the start of vasopressor therapy despite adequate fluid resuscitation (30 ml/kg). * A patient or relative who has been informed of the study protocol and has not objected to participating in the study Exclusion Criteria: * Pregnant or breastfeeding women * People not covered by a social security scheme or similar scheme * Adults subject to legal guardianship (guardianship, curatorship) * Patients with a language barrier * Persons deprived of their liberty by a judicial or administrative decision * Subjects participating in another interventional research study involving an exclusion period that is still ongoing at the time of pre-inclusion and which, in the investigator's judgement, may interfere with this study
