Saliva test may spot gum disease early

NCT ID NCT07025291

First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study looked at three substances in saliva (HIF-2α, MMP-9, and TRAP-5b) to see if they can tell the difference between healthy gums, gingivitis (mild gum inflammation), and periodontitis (serious gum disease). Researchers tested 60 non-smoking, healthy adults who had not taken certain medications recently. The goal was to find out if these saliva markers could be used as a simple, non-invasive way to diagnose gum disease.
