Nature's mouthwash: could tea tree oil and thyme tame gum disease?
NCT ID NCT06904742
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether herbal mouthwashes containing tea tree oil, thyme hydrosol, or essential oils can reduce the plaque and gum inflammation seen in gingivitis. About 52 adults with gingivitis will use one of these mouthwashes or a placebo twice daily for three months, alongside standard non-surgical gum treatment. Researchers will measure changes in plaque, gum bleeding, and pocket depths to see if these natural rinses offer extra benefit.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Herbal mouthwashes (tea tree oil, thyme hydrosol, and essential oil) used as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy
- What this could lead to
- If effective, these herbal mouthwashes could offer a natural, accessible way to improve gum health and prevent gingivitis from progressing to more serious periodontal disease.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 52 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The mouthwashes may not outperform the placebo or standard care, and individual responses can vary.
