ICU restraint reduction may shorten delirium in ventilated patients

NCT ID NCT04273360

First seen Nov 24, 2025 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tested whether using physical restraints (like wrist straps) less often in ICU patients on breathing machines could reduce the time they spend in delirium (confusion). 423 adults from 6 hospitals were randomly assigned to either routine restraint use or restraint only for severe agitation. The goal was to see if a more careful approach to restraints leads to more days without delirium.
