Old TB vaccine shows promise in taming type 1 diabetes

NCT ID NCT02081326

First seen Dec 16, 2025 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study tests whether repeated doses of the BCG vaccine (originally for tuberculosis) can lower blood sugar levels in adults with long-standing type 1 diabetes. About 150 participants will receive either BCG or a placebo over 5 years, with researchers tracking changes in HbA1c and insulin use. The goal is to improve glucose control without relying on the pancreas, by boosting the body's own sugar transport system.
