Old TB vaccine shows promise in controlling type 1 diabetes
NCT ID NCT02081326
First seen Dec 16, 2025 · Last updated May 10, 2026 · Updated 24 times
Summary
This study tests whether repeated doses of the BCG vaccine (originally for tuberculosis) can help adults with long-standing type 1 diabetes lower their blood sugar levels. Researchers believe BCG may improve how the body uses sugar, independent of the pancreas. The trial involves 150 adults and will follow them for up to 10 years to see if HbA1c levels drop and insulin needs decrease.
