Nerve block may slash pain and opioid need after belly surgery

NCT ID NCT07393763

First seen Feb 06, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study looked at whether adding a rectus sheath block (a type of nerve block) to general anesthesia can better control pain after a midline abdominal incision. 46 adults having abdominal surgery were randomly assigned to get either general anesthesia alone or general anesthesia plus the block. Researchers measured pain levels, how soon patients needed extra pain medicine, total opioid use, and inflammation markers after surgery.
