Tiny preemies, big questions: do blood transfusions harm their guts?
NCT ID NCT02741648
First seen Feb 06, 2026 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 14 times
Summary
This study looks at how anemia (low red blood cells) and blood transfusions affect oxygen levels in the digestive tract of extremely low birth weight babies (≤1250 grams). Researchers will monitor oxygen in the gut and analyze blood, urine, and stool to find clues that might predict a serious bowel problem called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). The goal is to better understand which babies are at risk and why.
