Nighttime protein shake may keep liver patients out of hospital

NCT ID NCT04096014

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 25 times

Summary

This study tests whether taking a protein supplement (Ensure Enlive) in the late evening and early morning can reduce hospital readmissions for people with hepatic encephalopathy, a brain condition caused by severe liver disease. About 40 adults with cirrhosis who have been hospitalized for this condition in the past year will take the supplement for 6 months. The goal is to see if the protein helps prevent muscle breakdown and lowers ammonia levels, which may reduce the need for repeat hospital stays.
