Small study paves way for smarter diuretic use in preemie lungs
NCT ID NCT05898022
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 29 times
Summary
This study looked at 19 premature babies with a chronic lung condition called bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Doctors often use diuretics (water pills) to help these babies breathe, but it's unclear who truly benefits. The researchers tested a personalized approach called an N-of-1 trial, where each baby was switched between the diuretic and a placebo to see if they responded. The goal was to learn how to design a larger, more definitive study on diuretic use for BPD.
